
Make pathways visible early
Before a slab is poured or a ceiling is closed, the electrical team needs a clear route for conduit, boxes, feeders and equipment connections. Structure, ductwork, plumbing and architectural finishes all compete for the same space. A route that looks open on one drawing can be occupied in the coordinated field layout.
Review the current drawings and submittals together. Confirm where conduits enter the building, where risers run, and how electrical pathways reach each floor or equipment area. Decisions about sleeves, penetrations and reserved space are easier to resolve before the next trade covers the work.
Questions that prevent avoidable rework
- Are electrical room, equipment and panel locations fixed in the latest drawings?
- Have ceiling spaces and risers been coordinated with mechanical and plumbing routes?
- Are slab, wall and building-entry penetrations identified before installation begins?
- Who communicates field changes, and how will revised layouts reach the crew?
A good coordination meeting ends with decisions someone can build from: a marked-up drawing, an approved detail, a responsibility for an RFI, or a clear sequence for access to the work area.
Keep coordination active through the job
Rough-in is not a single milestone. As rooms, equipment and finishes change, the project team should check whether the electrical routes and device locations still match the approved design. Field photos and clear communication help the next crew understand what was installed before it is covered.
For general contractors, the benefit is straightforward: fewer late conflicts and a more predictable path from rough-in to trim. For the electrical crew, it means building from an agreed plan instead of guessing around another trade's work.
